AbstractA model for forecasting monthly flows of the Iguazu, Parana and Paraguay rivers has been developed. As predictors for the creation of Multiple Linear Regression equations we used the shelterlevel air temperature and sea-surface temperatures at support points. Each studied field was separated into homogeneous regions, and for each homogeneous region a support point was chosen. These points are practically independent to each other and each point characterizes one homogeneous region. The set of all support points characterized the field over the Southern Hemisphere. The prediction model was tested with an independent data set, and the results indicate that they have the potential for operational use.
